What to expect
Periodontal disease is the term used to describe disease of the gums and supporting structures of the tooth. It is caused by bacteria and affects the space around the tooth. If left untreated it can lead to progressive inflammation, bone loss, loosening of the tooth and eventual loss of the tooth. Not everyone is equally susceptible to periodontal disease. Smokers, diabetics and people with a family history of the disease appear to be the most susceptible. Treatment of periodontal disease in conjunction with patient co-operation can lead to very satisfactory control and management of the disease.
